My first teaching job was on the same ship I grew up on, and I had a class of 8 children, ranging in age from about 7 to 12. The ship was invited to Vietnam and we went on a government-organised tour of Ho Chi Minh city. When we were in the cathedral as part of the tour, I encouraged my class to sing Dona Nobis Pacem, which I had taught them. 8 children's voices in pure, innocent harmony, reverberating around the walls of the cathedral, knowing we were in a country that bore terrible scars of war - it was one of the most poignant and beautiful moments of my life. No lyric changes needed this time. Just give us peace.
