Spann's father was, according to some sources, a pianist called Friday Ford. His mother, Josephine Erby, was a guitarist who had worked with Memphis Minnie and Bessie Smith, and his stepfather, Frank Houston Spann, was a preacher and musician. One of five children, Spann began playing the piano at the age of seven, with some lessons from Friday Ford, Frank Spann, and Little Brother Montgomery.
Otis Spann: Vocals & Piano

Massive thanks to Bob the Juke as always for sending me through his copy to colourise.

Festival was a 1966 TV special starring blues greats Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon, Brownie McGhee and Sonny Terry, Mable Hillery, Sunnyland Slim, Otis Spann, James Cotton, S.P. Leary, James Madison, Big Joe Williams, Jessie 'Lone Cat' Fuller and Jimmy Lee Morris.
Paddy Sampson, a television variety producer with the CBC, convinced his bosses to bring in an assortment of blues musicians to make an hour-long program to be sponsored by Bell Canada. Sampson was a longtime lover of the blues and had done previous work with Brownie McGhee.
Jan. 27-29, 1966: Blues musicians Muddy Waters and his aggregation are brought to Toronto by the CBC and spent three days performing and jamming in cbc’s Studio Seven on Mutual Street.
Although many knew each other, it turned out to be the first time, and last time, these artists would work together under one roof.
If any videos get blocked I tend to post them on my other social media platforms, so have a look if you don't want to miss anything! All links are here: https://linktr.ee/blues.in.colour
