Description
Imagine being one of the hottest new bands, coming off a #1 single after years of underground activity, being asked to write and produce music for an important movie project starring Richard Burton, then being replaced after delivering said music by "traditional" music. That is exactly what happened to Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart of Eurythmics. The director of the film did not think that the music they provided was appropriate and unceremoniously removed it. I think it was a big mistake. The music on "1984 (For The Love Of Big Brother)" was well produced, intelligent and moody, an otherworldly sounding soundtrack to a movie about the future and the movie itself? John Hurt's entrancing performance still stands out, but the traditional contemporary music that replaced them does not stand on its own like the Eurythmics 1984 soundtrack which still sounds fresh and edgy was definitely ahead of its time. It still sounds fresh and new today. Michael Radford maybe its time to do a new edition using all of the original Eurythmics tracks submitted. The single titled "Sexcrime", suffered underexposure on radio at the hands of music executives and program directors who thought that the title was apparently too controversial. If anyone could have pushed that envelope it would have been Annie and Dave. Can you imagine that? Afraid of offending "the public", the song died a quiet death, except in the clubs where the power of the DJ pushed it all the way to #2. I really loved this song, though the original 12" release was way too short and choppy. I'm a fan of underdog songs and thought this one could use a slight brush up...Annie's voice is in phenomenal shape and Dave Stewart's production is sterling. I think this one deserves another go round, don't you?
