On August 15, 1945, Korea was liberated from Japanese colonial rule, bringing freedom to many Koreans. Yet, even 80 years later, there are still those who have not been able to share in that joy. Just days after liberation, on August 24, the repatriation ship Ukishima departed Japan, only to suffer a mysterious explosion at sea. Many forced labor victims on board lost their lives without ever setting foot back on Korean soil.
In the ‘Arirang Special [Our Liberty Yet to Come]’ actor Yoon Joo-bin — a descendant of independence activist Yoon Bong-gil — sheds light on the ongoing pain of the victims’ families and explores how, even eight decades later, we can work to fulfill the long-held hopes of those affected by forced mobilization.


1945년 8월 15일, 조선이 일제로부터 해방되며 많은 한국인들에게 광복이 왔지만, 한편 80년이 지난 지금도 해방의 기쁨을 누리지 못한 이들이 남아 있다. 해방 이후 8월 24일, 일본에서 출발한 귀국선 우키시마호가 원인 모를 폭침을 겪었고, 배에 탑승했던 강제동원 피해자들은 한국 땅을 밟지 못한 채 바다 속에서 목숨을 잃게 되었는데.
‘아리랑 스페셜 [Our Liberty Yet to Come]’에서는 독립운동가 윤봉길 의사의 후손인 윤주빈 배우와 함께 우키시마호 참사 이후에도 계속되는 유족들의 아픔을 살피고, 광복 80년 이후에도 풀지 못한 강제동원 피해자들의 바람을 어떻게 찾아주어야 할지 알아본다.
